ATI FORMAT LCD PANELS.
ACTIVE AREA REFERENCE — 2ATI–6ATI.

The ATI family covers ARINC 408A instrument formats: square LCD active areas built to fit square panel cutouts, from small cockpit instruments to primary displays. Many ATI instruments present a round bezel aperture over a square display. Tannas carries eight catalog configurations from 45.68 mm to 121.54 mm square. Custom active areas are available between and beyond the catalog classes.

What Is an ATI Display Format?

ATI is a mounting standard, not a display size. ARINC 408A defines the instrument case that installs through the panel — square in cross-section with radiused corners. 2ATI through 6ATI name the case, not the screen inside it. Any LCD that fits the envelope and clears the bezel is an ATI display.

Is ATI a Size or a Mounting Standard?

A mounting standard. ARINC 408A governs the instrument case and how it installs through the panel. It does not govern the display inside the case.

So an ATI class does not correspond to one active area. The dimension that matters is the active area your instrument requires — see the catalog for what Tannas ships in each class, or how custom active areas are produced →

What ARINC 408A Specifies, and What It Does Not

ARINC 408A governs the instrument case and its installation: the panel cutout, the case cross-section, and the mounting.

The case cross-section is square. Published 408A housing dimensions give equal width and height in every class — 2.175 in for 2ATI, 3.175 in for 3ATI, 4.975 in for 5ATI. Comparing the case and cutout columns of the standard’s dimension table gives a constant 0.085 in difference from 2ATI through 6ATI: the clearance for the case to pass through the panel.

The standard does not specify the display module footprint, the active area, the bezel aperture, or the position of the display within the case. Those are set by the instrument manufacturer.

Active area is therefore an instrument-level dimension rather than a format-level one. Specify the active area in millimetres.

Is a 4ATI Display the Same as a 4×4 Display?

No. 4ATI is an ARINC 408A case class. “4×4” describes an approximate display size in inches. The ATI designation specifies the case, not the display inside it, so the two are not equivalent. Match on active area in millimetres rather than on the label.

Why Published ATI Active Areas Differ Between Sources

Because the standard does not fix them. Each published figure describes one product. Tannas ships more than one active area in the 3ATI, 4ATI and 5ATI classes; the catalog above lists them.

Are NVIS-Compatible ATI Displays Available?

Fit is the constraint that usually drives the search, but it is rarely the only requirement on a cockpit display.

Dual-mode day/NVIS operation is available across all ATI formats. Displays can be specified for daylight-readable output and night-vision-compatible operation, so a single unit serves both conditions.

Brightness, interface, resolution and module integration are specified per program. Configurations can be supplied as bare cells or as complete modules with backlight and drive electronics, depending on how the instrument is built and what the retrofit needs to replace.

How Do I Specify an ATI Display Replacement?

Four pieces of information are enough to get a feasibility answer. None of them require knowing the ATI class.

1. Active area, H × V, in millimetres. The single most important number. Measure the lit region of the original display if you have it.

2. The original part number, if the display is identifiable. This resolves resolution, interface and backlight without further measurement, and it matters most when the original panel is discontinued.

3. Configuration required. Bare cell, or a complete module with backlight and drive electronics.

4. Application and environment. Aircraft type or program, and any brightness, NVIS or temperature requirement.

If the dimension falls between catalog configurations, that is the normal case rather than an exception. Fielded instruments rarely match a catalog figure exactly, and the active area is set by the requirement rather than by a fixed product line.

Fielded instruments rarely match a catalog dimension exactly.
